Scarecrow contest scares off the coronavirus blues.

Residents in Disley have taken it upon themselves to defeat the coronavirus sadness. Encouraging each other to create scarecrows and showcase them outside their houses.

The coronavirus has had a huge impact on everyone’s lives and it has caused sadness and anxiety for many people.

Disley residents are trying to look out for everyone they can and are trying to get the community involved in events they can do at home.

The scarecrow competition was started in Disley by Lauren Matthews who said that “I wanted to get the community involved in something fun to distract, not just children but everyone in the community”

Many people have got on board with this challenge and is adding a vibrant display of scarecrows through the village.

Lauren Matthews stated that the idea came from the Scarecrow lockdown competition Facebook group which encouraged residents in Crewe to make scarecrows.

Local Resident Sanny Rudravajhala spoke about how he feels about the competition.

“I noticed the amazing scarecrows popping up to scare corona away. It is certainly cheering to see the community coming together at a time like this. It is certainly bringing a lot of joy to people on their daily walks”

With shop closures and events being cancelled the scarecrow competition is a good distraction for people.

Images of the scarecrows are being posted on Facebook to share the competition and more people are getting involved every day. Whether that be taking pictures of the scarecrows they see, or making their own.

This is a very uncertain time for everyone but what is clear is that the community is there for each other to help everyone get through this challenging time.

It’s not just the scarecrow competition keeping the community spirits high, clapping for NHS is bringing everyone together and making feel very “connected.”

“Feeling connected. After days of people staying in their homes, coming together to clap the NHS at the same time was very uplifting”

Disley Parish Council are also trying to keep spirits up and making sure that there is help for people who need it.

The Disley e-bulletin contains an anxiety workbook about how to get help during the lockdown.

The Parish Council are also using twitter as a platform to reach out the public and keep the spirits high during this scary and uncertain time.

residents ignoring signs, leading to injured livestock.

sheep and lambs

A campaign has been put in place by the Cheshire Police Rural Crime department to stop the rise of attacks on sheep after residents in Disley have been ignoring the warning signs.

There have been an increased number of Livestock attacks on sheep around the Disley area even though new signs have been put up instructing dog walkers to not let their dogs off leads.

In 2019 a report came out in the Manchester Evening News titled “dogs are attacking and killing sheep at Lyme Park.” Informing residents of the danger that dogs can have on animals such as sheep.

More residents are going on walks around the village near fields of sheep. It is worrying that people are ignoring the signs and still letting their dogs off the leads near the livestock.

Over the past few weeks Disley police have taken to twitter to alert the public about the increasing attacks on sheep and action is taking place to reduce the danger.

“All dog walkers, we’ve had a few distressing incidents with dogs off the lead attacking or worrying sheep. Please keep your dogs on a lead especially if you can see sheep. Many farmers have put notices on styals and gates where they have sheep out. Help our farmers. Thank You”

Some residents in Disley have expressed their opinions about the warning signs calling them “Unnecessary” and a “lack of freedom”.

Chris Farewell, local resident discussed his opinion “When I walk my dog I don’t want him to feel restricted, I don’t want to be restricted either. It feels like we have a lack of freedom when we are already having to be locked away at home. I get that farmers are worried but I think that it’s unnecessary to start up the campaign.”

Many other local residents are expressing their concerns via twitter about the rules in place.

Breaking the campaign rules have no offence attached to them at this moment. However, PCSO’s are patrolling areas around Disley and are talking to the public if there is a worry or concern involving their dog.

Ignoring the rules and warning signs are putting sheep in danger. Dogs can frighten and harm the animals putting them in a very distressing situation.

Cheshire police ask that if you are around fields with sheep in, please keep dogs on leads and keep a close eye on any danger that may appear.

Residents break the law to get justice for their village

Residents in Disley are left appalled as local areas in the village have been vandalised by graffiti and the police have warned the locals to “not illegally search or assault someone you think might be involved”

Many loved locations in the village have been targeted and ruined with graffiti leaving residents annoyed and upset that their home area is slowly being destroyed.

There have been over 43 reports of anti social behaviour since October 2019 according to cheshireeast.gov

The PCSO Facebook page is constantly updating residents on the criminal activity.

Some members in the Disley and Macclesfield area feel that the police are not dealing with the incidents in the correct way and have started to take control themselves.

There are a lot of suspicions about who could be the vandal but the police have put out an alert, warning people to not take matters into their own hands.

There has been some fallback from this alert with some local members feeling that they should be allowed to handle the ‘criminals’ if they see suspicious activity.

PCSO Rob has given me an update on the situation

A few months ago we were passed 2 names in relation to one of the tags ‘WARN’ which was plastered all over Poynton. We suspected these people were involved in the other tags such as ‘GONE’ and ‘RISE’ due to the similarity in styles.

We spoke to the suspect who lives in Cheshire and their parents. Since the suspect and their parents were spoken to we haven’t had any further distressing reports of Graffiti in Disley that is having a big impact, this may be down to the advice given to the suspect and their parents, but it could also be due to the impact of the Coronavirus.

This news has shed a light on the situation and has put many residents at ease about the vandals.

There have been limited complaints from residents recently but this has not yet stopped their actions towards the ‘criminals’

The identity has been kept private but people still have their suspicions and are wary around school children who they think may be involved in the scandal.

“We’ve been out on patrol gathering evidence to help investigate the graffiti in Disley. We have already had some good intel and have spoken to the suspect, but if you know anything then we are always looking for more info. This will be recorded as criminal damage and investigated as such.” PSCO Street (Disley officer)

PCSO Street asks that if anyone knows anything about the recent graffiti to please get in touch:
